The Oakland Raiders played it smart on Thursday and picked Khalil Mack at number five in the draft and now in rounds 2 and 3 on Friday, the team has options in Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo and AJ McCarron at quarterback, while other names like Louis Nix III, Timmy Jernigan and Marqise Lee are available and it's likely the team will have to battle with the Houston Texans for some of those players at the top of each round.
The Raiders had the chance to select Johnny Manziel and they opted to go with Mack, who many felt could have been the number one pick to the Texans over Jadeveon Clowney. The Raiders may have had the chance to trade out of the number five spot, but when Reggie McKenzie saw that he could get Mack, he felt that was too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially with the way the team has rushed the passer over the past couple years.,
Mack now adds to a line that includes Justin Tuck and LaMarr Woodley and that gives the entire defense a boost after the team drafted DJ Hayden last season and now McKenzie could go offense with his first pick in the second round. The Raiders don't necessarily "need" a quarterback, as they traded for Matt Schaub in the offseason, but with Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards as the other QBs on the roster, there isn't a long term franchise guy there, especially because McGloin wasn't considered solid enough to be the starter coming out of last season.
Both Garoppolo and Carr should be there if the Texans opt to go with a running back or another position at the top of the second draft and ESPN.com reports there is a chance that the Raiders could trade the pick or go with Carr. The team has needs at other positions so that will be a factor and on top of that, they also like Tom Savage and he likely will be available later in the draft. The Raiders also may look at trading back, as they could use some more picks to fill up those holes on the roster.
ESPN.com writes that Louis Nix could be an option at defensive tackle, as could Timmy Jernigan and that could be a nice value pick, as he was expected to be a first round pick but he fell due to a bad test at the combine. The team already picked Mack, so staying away from the offensive line is probably a good idea, but McKenzie and company may just look at talent and if those players are on the board, one could be the pick.
Carr was very productive in college and with the Texans likely passing on him to avoid the Carr connections from the past, the Raiders could be the beneficiary of him falling. Carr comes in after passing for 5,000 yards last season with 50 touchdowns and at the number 36 pick the Raiders could be in business. The team did not want Manziel and while they like Savage, he may not last until the third day and that could be a factor for the team as well. With Teddy Bridgewater off the board too, it could be the last chance to get a QB before the run on that position begins.
