Minnesota Vikings Rumors: Christian Ponder Trade To Dallas Cowboys For Tony Romo Backup After Matt Cassel Starter Over Teddy Bridgewater?

The Minnesota Vikings my look at a Christian Ponder trade at some point now that Matt Cassel has been named the starter over Teddy Bridgewater, as the St. Louis Rams need a quarterback after Sam Bradford went down, while the Dallas Cowboys may look at a deal as insurance for Tony Romo's back issues for the season and this comes as teams like the Houston Texans or Buffalo Bills also could be interested if the Vikes make Ponder available in trades.

According to NFL.com, Ponder said that he is not auditioning for other teams while he is playing in the preseason and while the Vikings have not been shopping him in a trade, his name could come up if someone gets injured. The team decided on Matt Cassel as the starter over Teddy Bridgewater and while Norv Turner has given Ponder high praise for his work ethic, a trade could go down at some point this season.

The Buffalo Bills, St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers have all had issues with their QB situations and names like Ponder, Ryan Mallett and Mark Sanchez have been mentioned as potential players that could move. Last season Ponder had 1,648 yards passing and seven touchdowns while dealing with injuries and he has mostly been a disappointment in Minnesota since being a first round draft pick a few years ago.

Tony Romo is coming off of a back injury and while the Cowboys are not worried now about it, there is a chance they could look at another QB over Brandon Weeden. For now Weeden has been a sol; id backup and he could end up being a solid starter if Romo is injured, but there always is a chance that Jerry Jones could make a move. Last season Kyle Orton had to start the season finale and the team ended up losing and missing the playoffs again. Now the team is hoping for a bounce back year and they need Romo to be healthy.

Even if the team doesn't trade for Ponder or someone else, they could pick up a player off the free agent market for some support behind Romo. The team has the chance to win the NFC East as long as Romo is healthy and that likely will be the main thing that decides the season for the Cowboys. Jones and everyone else is feeling the pressure and while Jason Garrett may not have his job on the line, if the team ends up playing badly and has a losing record after going 8-8, he could be on his way out.

The Cowboys have lost their first three preseason games, but that doesn't mean much and now they are coming into the season with a tough opening schedule. The team has the San Francisco 49ers at home to start and then they will be on the road against the Titans and the Rams before coming back to play the Saints in Week 4. The team also has the Seahawks, Giants and Redskins before their bye week.
