A former goalkeeper in Brazil was convicted and sentenced 22 years in prison on Friday for killing his ex-girlfriend, according to the Associated Press.

The report says that the news story appeared all over Brazil and that former Flamingo goalkeeper Bruno Souza was convicted of murdering Model Eliza Samudio by a jury of five women and two men in Minas Gerais. The 28-year-old star was accused of dismembering the body, as it was never found. Reports say that her remains were fed to dogs.

The report says that the defense lawyers are planning to appeal the ruling for Bruno and he will now face a double-decade sentence. The former Flamingo goalie was convicted of kidnapping Samudio and attempting to force her to have an abortion while she was pregnant.

"I expected more,'' the model's mother, Eliza Silva Samudio, told local media after Friday's sentence. "They made it easy on him.''

The sentence for Bruno was reduced after he confessed and under the laws of Brazil, he can gain freedom based on his behavior while incarcerated, The goalie was the former captain of Flamengo and led the team to a Brazilian league title a few years ago.

"These crimes received a lot of attention not only because one of the defendants was a famous football player, but also because of the plot that they involved, and because of the mystery of where the victim's remains were hidden,'' said the sentence read by judge Marixa Fabiane Lopes Rodrigues.

According to the report, after Bruno found out that his girlfriend was pregnant, he tried to kidnap her with other acquaintances and tried to make her terminate her pregnancy, but she did not and she gave birth to a baby boy.
