Premier League Results: Luis Suarez Outshines Gareth Bale as Liverpool Edge Tottenham

In a topsy-turvy game which had everyone on the edge of their seats, Liverpool came from behind to carve out a memorable 3-2 victory over high-flying Tottenham in the English Premier League.

Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez had an impact, but the Liverpool striker had a bigger one and expectedly it was the deciding factor in the home side running away winners at Anfield.

Goals from Suarez, Stewart Downing and Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the three points, with a brace from Jan Vertonghen coming to no avail.

The win means Liverpool move up to sixth in the table with 45 points, while Spurs, who were unbeaten in 12 games before Sunday, stay third on 54 points; although it gives the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal a chance to take advantage, having not played in the Premier League this weekend.

The game began expectedly, with both teams, who like to attack, looking to get on the front foot. It was Liverpool that had the first real chance as Philippe Coutinho played a delightful first-time through ball to Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool forward though took a really heavy first touch to get past the advancing Hugo Lloris and with it throwing away the golden opportunity.

Coutinho created the first goal though, playing in Jose Enrique, who waited before giving the ball to Luis Suarez to strike it with the outside of his right foot past Lloris at the near post in the 21st minute.

Spurs pressed and probed as Bale, playing in that hole behind the striker Jermaine Defoe looked to find the opening, and the goal came just before halftime.

Bale had a say in it of course, playing a pinpoint cross for Vertonghen to head home from close range.

The away side came out better after halftime and deservedly took the lead eight minutes into the second period. Bale's freekick was not cleared by Liverpool and the ball fell to Vertonghen, who made no mistake in smashing it into the back of the net from ten yards out.

Spurs were definitely on the ascendancy and almost went 3-1 up, but Gylfi Sigurdsson saw his strike come off the post. Moussa Dembele then tested Brad Jones with a brilliant strike as Liverpool looked to hold on to the attacking barrage from Tottenham.

Once the home side settled down though, they found their way back slowly but surely, although they were helped quite a bit by their opponents for the equalizer.

Kyle Walker played a ridiculous back pass, which left Lloris in no man's land. The French goalkeeper then missed his clearance allowing Downing to take his time before firing in a right-footed strike through the legs of Vertonghen on the line in the 66th minute.

Liverpool now looked the more likely to go on and get the winning goal and Suarez again came up trumps. The Uruguayan twisted and turned inside the box with Benoit Assou-Ekotto making a clumsy challenge on the Liverpool striker inside the box.

The referee pointed to the spot and Steven Gerrard duly dispatched it into the bottom corner sending the goalkeeper the wrong way as the home side took home what could be a vital three points.

In the day's other Premier League game, Newcastle continued their climb up the table with a hard fought 2-1 win over Stoke.

Jonathan Walters opened the scoring for the away side at St James' Park from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, before Yohan Cabaye got Newcastle back on level terms five minutes later.

Papiss Cisse then struck the winner in stoppage time, latching onto a through ball from Sylvain Marveaux before calmly slotting the ball past Asmir Begovic.
