FA Cup Results: Chelsea Produce Stirring Comeback to Hold Manchester United in Thrilling Quarterfinal

Chelsea produced a stirring comeback from two goals down in an F.A. Cup quarterfinal tie for the ages as Manchester United felt the pressure of the Blues at Old Trafford.

Goals from Eden Hazard and Ramires canceled out early strikes from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney to take the last eight tie to a replay.

Expectedly Sir Alex Ferguson brought back Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa back into the starting lineup, while Javier Hernandez was preferred up front to the - by his own standards - slightly out of form Robin Van Persie.

The game was a little cagey to begin with, but United definitely had the more cut and thrust going forward. The game was thought to have been out to bed within the first 11 minutes.

First, it was Hernandez, who has a penchant for scoring against Chelsea, who found the back of the net in the fifth minute.

Michael Carrick, shaping to play the ball towards the right wing, played a brilliantly disguised through ball over the top of the Chelsea defense, finding Hernandez, who looped his header over the stranded Petr Cech to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

If Chelsea thought the task of coming back from a goal down at the Theatre of Dreams was hard enough, it was made even more difficult six minutes later. Wayne Rooney curled in a freekick from the edge of the left hand side of the box, with no Chelsea defender, or indeed United attacker, getting a touch, as the ball creeped into the far corner.

Chelsea, to their credit, did not let their heads drop, and enjoyed quite a bit of possession with Victor Moses and Frank Lampard going close.

First, Moses found a lot of space inside the box, but decided to take a shot on himself instead of probably playing in a teammate, with the strike comfortably deflected away.

Frank Lampard, chasing the all-time Blues goalscoring record of Bobby Tambling, should have really made it 2-1, but struck his shot straight at David De Gea, after typically arriving late to find space just outside the box.

United midfielder Tom Cleverley had a couple of half-chances, which Chelsea just about saw through, and Petr Cech made a nice double save, as the game headed into halftime with the home team holding all the aces.

The second half saw a more purposeful Chelsea side come out and substitute Eden Hazard cut the deficit just before the hour.

The Belgian, who had come on for Victor Moses early in the second period, curled in a brilliant strike from the edge of the area after taking a pass from Juan Mata.

The stunning comeback was completed eight minutes later with a perfect counter-attack. Demba Ba powered through before finding Oscar running at pace. The Brazilian then played a nice ball through to Ramires on the right, who cut inside before placing the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.

The Blues were red-hot now and looked the likely team to score the third goal, with Mata coming close on a couple of occasions after finding space inside the box. Van Persie also had a decent chance at the other end, but the goal kept eluding him.

The last few minutes of the game was all Chelsea, and Mata had an absolutely brilliant opportunity to take his side towards another Wembley date.

The little Spaniard plucked a ball out from the air before twisting and turning Jonny Evans; David De Gea, however, made an absolutely outstanding save to keep Mata's strike out and more importantly keep the tie at 2-2.

There was time for one more chance and one more save from De Gea, this time a parry off a Hazard strike from 16 yards.

It's now onto Stamford Bridge for the replay and another battle of minds between old foes Rafa Benitez and Ferguson.
