The Ohio State Buckeyes enter Friday's game against Iona as big favorites, but the team and coach Thad Matta know that anything can happen in the NCAA tournament, so they will be ready as the two face off at University of Dayton Arena.
The Buckeyes are lucky enough to have their home state crowd behind them, although they have not done well at Dayton under Matta, getting eliminated before the weekend finished each time, but this year feels different for the team. The second seeded Buckeyes have gone 1-2 during Matta's time and after coming into the tournament as Big Ten champions, they will not let this opportunity fall through the cracks.
While Ohio State has some bad history, the recent memories for Iona are even worse, as the team blew one of the biggest leads in tournament history on the court last year. The Gaels had a 25-point lead over BYU in the First Four last season, but ended up dropping the game 78-72 to take the biggest blown lead in tournament history. Although only four player are still on the team from that squad, it will be something that will be on the minds of Iona, and Ohio State for that matter.
"It's not something that I try to think about," senior Lamont Jones said. "At that point in time, we lost. I took what I could from it. But it's not something that fuels my fire. It's a totally different team, totally different identity, personalities, nine new players."
Iona does not have anything close to the history in the tournament as the Buckeyes, with the Gaels going just 1-8 in school history, the only win coming in 1980. Ohio State has had themselves a fantastic season in the Big Ten and were able to stay at their home base while preparing for the game since they are in Dayton.
Ohio State ranks 110th in scoring in the nation with nearly 70 points per game and hitting over 45 percent of their shots from the field. The team is ranked 135th in rebounding and 123rd in assists. The team went 13-5 in the Big Ten on their way to a 26-7 record and ended the year with eight straight winds, including a victory over Wisconsin in the conference title game.
Iona went 20-13 while going 11-7 in the MAAC and ranked second in scoring with 80 points per game and was 25th in assists. The team hit over 45 percent from the field and were ranked 110th in rebounding while finishing the season with five straight wins.
