The Cleveland Browns have their primary quarterback situation set heading into the 2013 offseason workout program, but the team is taking no chances heading into the draft in April, which is why the team is working out Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib after trading away Colt McCoy.
According to ESPN.com, Nassib will work out with the Browns as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills, where his former head coach at Syracuse now has the same job there. The report says that Browns coach Rob Chudzinski, offensive coordinator Norv Turner and other team personnel will watch Nassib as he throws and works out.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, "Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib's private workout schedule as of now: Browns on Thurs; Jaguars on Fri; Bills on Sun; visiting AZ Cards next week."
Nassib will work out for the Jaguars and coach Gus Bradley, offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch and general manager David Caldwell on Friday and will also do one for the Bills. The workouts will take place at Syracuse where he played college and the report says that general manager Buddy Nix, assistant general manager Doug Whaley and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will watch Nassib.
Nassib has scheduled meetings with the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets also hosted him for dinner last month, fueling speculation that he could end up in New York with Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez.
The Browns are also holding a private workout for Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel and the team has previously looked at Geno Smith and others. According to Cleveland.com, the team will hold a workout with Arizona quarterback Matt Scott and West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin.
The Browns are doing their due diligence despite signing backup Jason Campbell, as they feel adding a quarterback for the future could be important since Brandon Weeden is an older player due to playing minor league baseball. The Browns were a possible landing spot for Tebow and the team also traded away Colt McCoy to the 49ers, leaving another spot open for a young quarterback.
Owner Jimmy Haslam said that he wanted to bring in competition for Weeden and he did that with Campbell, but he may feel that a push from another young player could help. The Browns have the sixth pick and there are a number of players they could go after, including Dee Milliner and Shariff Floyd.
