Michelle Wie's apology story was the dominant thread at the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship as Hall of Fame star Annika Sorenstam made some comments to a magazine about the former prodigy's talents, but that did not stop Inbee Park from South Korea from winning the title with a 69 on the final round on Sunday to take her second career title.
Park was tops when play began and no one could close in on her at the course in California, including Wie, who may have been distracted with all the news. The 23-year-old has struggled recently and after some comments were made to Golf Magazine, the former champion apologized, which Wie said she accepted with no problem. She has missed a number of cuts over the past few years and had issues even scoring 70 on most courses and tournaments, including in California.
The former prodigy has been over shadowed by players like Park, who can find ways to win despite not being as heralded as Wie was. Lydia Ko has been very successful as a 15-year-old and has shown some of the promise that Wie did when she was younger. Sorenstam said that one reason Wie may not have had much success was due to the fact that she played in too many men's tournaments and not enough with women and also that her talent that many saw when she was younger is simply no longer there.
Ryu So-yeon came in second and Lizette Salas had a chance at the start of the day after being three back, but she blew any chance and that gave the opening for Park, who also won the 2008 US Open title. Karrie Webb finished tied for fifth at the tournament where she won her last major and Park is now number two in the world behind Stacy Lewis after taking the top spot in California.
Wie struggled once again and now will have to look further down the schedule for a chance to win. Wie has not won since the 2010 Canadian Women's Open and now may have missed any chance to be a successful professional golfer.
