The New York Yankees were rumored to be interested in Justin Morneau at the trade deadline with the Minnesota Twins having a tough season and now reports have come out that the team has placed the first baseman on waivers.
According to ESPN.com, the Yankees could have a chance to claim Morneau, as he will be on the wire for 48 hours while other teams can claim him and since the Yankees record is where it is, they could have the chance to claim him. The reason he may have been placed on waivers issue to his contract and the star would be getting $3.67 million due to him.
The 32-year-old star is a former MVP and he is hitting .262 with 14 homers and 67 RBIs this year, but has a .319 on-base percentage and the Yankees may feel he is better than Lyle Overbay, although he has been solid for the team this season. Other teams could go after Morneau and the Yankees may want to sit back after already trading for Alfonso Soriano.
