Dario Franchitti suffered a scary crash at the Grand Prix of Houston this past week, fracturing his back and suffering a concussion and after he was taken in for treatment, his estranged wife in actress Ashley Judd came to his side to be with him.
According to ESPN.com, Franchitti suffered the injures in a crash at the end of the race on Sunday, as his car went into the air and hit the fence in the IndyCar race, also pushing debris into the crowd, injuring fans and officials. The crash ended up fracturing two vertebrae in Franchitti's back and he also suffered a concussion along with the spinal injury. The report from ESPN.com says that he also had ankle surgery, while USA Today reports that Judd, who split with Franchitti earlier this year, came to his care after the crash.
Judd tweeted out thanks for all the prayers given by people and she also wrote that she quickly came to Franchitti after finding out about the crash. Franchitti has previously won three Indianapolis 500 races and he was brought to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center after the crash and USA Today reports that he will be taken to Indianapolis after getting care there.
Judd and Franchitti were together for over 10 years and they split earlier this year and now Franchitti will need time to recover from his injuries. Franchitti was able to put out a statement through Target Chip Ganassi Racing and said that he is thankful for all the people wishing him well and that he hopes for the best for anyone else that was injured in the race.
The crash happened on the last lap of the event and ESPN.com reports that Franchitti hit the back of another car, which prompted the car to flip and hit the fence. The crash took apart some of the fence area and littered the stands with debris and three cars were wrecked in the process. Franchitti fortunately survived the crash and now he will need some time to recover.
