The Washington Redskins lost on Thursday night football to the Minnesota Vikings and at the game the team was met with a protest from the American Indian Movement and one the same day, Mother Jones looked back to when the American Nazi Party protested FOR the Redskins about keeping their team "all-white".
The article on Mother Jones from this week was to mark the anniversary of the American Nazi Party protesting for the Redskins, as they organized in 1961 to fight back against the team integrating with black players. Owner George Preston Marshall, who opposed having black players as well because he was a racist, supported the idea of keeping the team all-white and refused to sign a black player for some time, once saying: "the Redskins colors are burgundy, gold and Caucasian."
The Redskins have been under heavy fire the past year about their name, which Dan Snyder claims is not racist, but when a former owner says what he says and the American Nazi's are protesting in line with you, what are you trying to save? This is why the Oneida nation wants the name changed and while it could take years, it is gaining more and more steam and could happen later down the line.
As MJ reported: John F. Kennedy's interior secretary, Stewart Udall, said that the team having an all-white team and not signing a black player was outrageous and the protest was detailed in the book, Showdown: JFK and the Integration of the Washington Redskins from 2012. There were also protests at the Vikings game of people speaking out about the name, including former governor Jesse Ventura.
