The New York Rangers and LA Kings are playing game 5 and the radio stream coverage is from ESPN radio streaming online at 8 pm ET from Los Angeles at the Staples Center for the NHL playoffs and the Stanley Cup will be in the building and the series could end tonight with the Kings up 3-1 in the series.
The Rangers now have a chance to force a game 6 and that would not be an unprecedented thing for the Kings, as they went to the Stanley Cup a couple years ago and went up 3-0 on the Devils before dropping the next two games in that series. The team ended up winning the Cup in six so it didn't matter, but they could have that in the back of their minds when the game comes on Friday. The Rangers have played well enough to win at least two of the four games in the series and if they somehow can get it to Game 6, it may not matter anymore how those first two games in LA went.
The Rangers need more from Brad Richards and Rick Nash, as both of those players are paid like elite stars, but neither have played that way in the playoffs. Richards has had his moments and he is a leader, but he has not played well in the finals and was demoted to the fourth line by Alain Vigneault and now he could get less playing time as Game 5 comes. Rick Nash could use to get some work on the power play since he could use the extra room on the ice, but that remains to be seen and he needs to become a better goal scorer again. Nash is paid like an elite scorer, but he has not been able to do that in his Rangers career, especially in the playoffs.
Henrik Lundqvist was brilliant and he now has an insane save percentage and goals against average in elimination games and the Rangers are 11-2 in those games over the last 13 and Lundqvist has won his last eight. The team would love nothing more than to take it into a Game 7 and while that would be an amazing comeback, the team knows they have plenty more to do and this game has to be won to stay alive. The Rangers need to start off fast again and that is what they did in the last game, getting a great goal to open the scoring.
The Rangers had some good chances and they finally got one by Jonathan Quick in the first period after a shot from John Moore near the blue line. The shot was going wide, but Benoit Pouliot put up his stick and deflected it down and into the net and that gave the team a 1-0 lead. The second goal came from Martin St. Louis after assists from Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan and that line was very strong after Brad Richards was moved along and they needed that goal badly. St. Louis had a shot like that earlier in the series and missed, but this time he elevated the puck up and in. Dan Girardi has had no luck in this series and he broke a stick and gave up a breakaway to Dustin Brown, who totally beat Lundqvist for the only goal for the Kings.
