The Yankees badly needed to get going and they returned the favor to the Mariners, who swept the Yankees in the three games they played in NY and that was spread out, as the M's won two games and then the third game that was made up for rain. Roenis Elias did not have it against the Yankees and Chase Whitley was much better and the Yanks got the win and now they will matchup against the Athletics, who are leading in the AL West.
The Yankees got the win 6-3 to sweep out the M's and the team got its 16th save from David Robertson and now on Friday night David Phelps and Sonny Gray will face off in the pitching matchup. The game on Saturday has Scott Kazmir and Hiroki Kuroda against each other and this will be a big series for the Yankees, who are now three over .500 and facing off against one of the best teams in baseball. The A's have 40 wins this season already and they are coming in after a win against the Angels and they beat Jered Weaver in that matchup and now they are trying to beat the Yankees at home after playing on the road.
The Athletics are second in the league in runs scored and on base percentage this season and they are also sixth in slugging percentage and 19th in batting average. The team is pitching better than anyone in the league and they are ranked first in overall ERA, WHIP and BAA and they are third in quality starts and they have Gray coming into this game at 6-2 and Kazmir will be on the mound at 7-2 on Saturday night.
The Yankees are 20th in the league in runs this season and they are starting to come together a bit on offense, but they have a ton of pitching injuries. Michael Pineda and CC Sabathia are both on the mend and they could use some arms back and they need players like Phelps to step up along with Whitley, who pitched well last night.
