Manchester United Transfer Rumours: Sven Bender Being Targeted by Ferguson as Red Devils Consider Making Bid

Manchester United's hunt for a ball-winning midfielder, capable of running things in the center of the park has taken them high and wide across the world; and now the latest player to be linked with a move to United is Borussia Dortmun's Sven Bender.

Bender, a full German international, has garnered the interest of Sir Alex Ferguson, with United seriously considering a move for the 23-year-old, who is rated at £15 million ($24 million), according to the Times.

The Dortmund midfielder's season this year has been hampered by injuries, making just a handful of appearances, but there is little doubt about the player's talents.

At his best, Bender is capable of controlling the midfield and was brought in by Dortmund as a long-term successor to skipper Sebastian Kehl. He enjoyed much success in his last two seasons with the club, winning the league and cup double.

Ferguson had earlier ruled out any major signing in the January transfer window, so it will be interesting to see whether the Scot makes a move for the Dortmund man this month or waits until the end of the season.

It is unclear whether Dortmund would be ready to let go of their player in the winter window, meaning even if Ferguson is keen on adding the player as soon as possible, he may have to wait for the summer transfer window to open before making a move.

United have been long linked with defensive midfielders, with Kevin Strootman and Fernandinho also reportedly on the club's radar. There were suggestions that the Red Devils were close to agreeing a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for Fernandinho, so it remains to be seen whether those reports are true.

There is little doubt that United require a strong midfielder, despite holding a seven-point lead at the top of the table. Michael Carrick, while doing an admirable job, could use some help, and Bender could be the perfect addition to the ranks -- if United were to make a move.
